I have learned that some questions become richer when more people can enter the conversation.
My community work has taken two forms: practical local support for transgender community members and international dialogue on transgender inclusion, with LGBTQ+ advocates and wider community perspectives also represented.
Both have taught me to listen before drawing conclusions.
STUDENT INITIATIVE ON TRANSGENDER INCLUSION
FROM CONVERSATION TO PRACTICAL SUPPORT
With three peers, I worked on practical support for transgender community members through outreach in Ghata Village and with MITR Trust.
Together, our four-student team raised approximately ₹75,000 and used the funds for practical support, including hygiene supplies, cooling equipment, a projector and other essential resources.
The work also involved listening to community concerns around documentation, employment, stigma and access to support.
WHAT CAME FROM THE WORK
Working directly with community members taught me that support is most useful when it responds to needs people identify themselves. It made me more attentive to listening before deciding what action to take.
GLOBAL TRANSGENDER INCLUSION DIALOGUES
BRINGING DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES INTO THE SAME CONVERSATION
I organized and moderated two international roundtables on transgender inclusion, bringing together 20+ voices across five continents. The discussions centered transgender experiences and inclusion, while also including LGBTQ+ advocates and wider community perspectives.
The conversations explored lived experience, legal recognition, economic empowerment, workplace inclusion and practical pathways to change.
